CHARNI ROAD Overview
Charni Road is fast becoming synonymous to posh and elite residential addresses in town. It lies ahead of Pedder Road and Warden Road. An iconic 150-story hotel is coming up just next to the Saifee Hospital. A well-planned locality, the area is engulfed by greenery and gardens already. Do you know the history of Charni road? The British Government has levied a grazing tax for cattle to graze in Camp Maidan (now called Azad Maidan). It’s then that Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy bought the grasslands here and announced opening these grounds to the locals for cattle grazing. The Marathi word for grazing is "Charne", and hence this name for the area got popular. Then in 1884, Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy (1845–1913), who was a philanthropist, built many properties, a mosque, Sanatorium, and also the Amanbai Charitable Hospital, which is now known as Saifee Hospital which is situated on the Charni Road, just opposite to the railway station here.
