KURLA WEST Overview
Kurla, a locality in East of Mumbai, is the headquarters of Kurla Taluka of Mumbai Suburban District. Its name comes from eponymous East Indian village that it is an offshoot of. But the railway station of this area was spelt differently as Coorla till 1890.
To go back in history, the Kurla village came under the Portuguese rule around the time when the Treaty of Bassein (1534) was signed. Kurla was under the Portuguese rule till 1774. By the 20th century, Kurla developed into the the mill industry’s’ center. By 1910, many mills were manufacturing cotton and woollen cloth. Due to the lower priced land and nearness to water bodies and power supply, rapid industrial development happened in the suburbs of this area.
Kurla is situated on the southern end of Salsette Island and has the Mithi River on the east bank. Kurla (East) and Kurla (West) are divided by the Central Railway line. Kurla West is engulfed by Saki Naka and Ghatkopar localities such as Andheri East, Bandra Kurla Complex and Kalina in the West direction and the Sion Dharavi in its south. Today’s Kurla West is a blend of urban residential colonies of all sizes, industries, commercial hubs and much more.
