Cooke Town Overview
Named after G H Cooke, Cooke Town is a neighbourhood in Bangalore Cantonment. It was built before independence (1900) and hence is one of the oldest suburbs in the city. G H Cooke was the President of the Bangalore Civil and Military Station Municipality between 1928 and 1934. The Mayo Hall was constructed during his tenure as well. The suburb which is surrounded by the neighbourhoods of Fraser Town, Cox Town, Pottery Town, Richards Town and Benson Town has seen considerable changes over the passage of time with large British Raj era bungalows being demolished to build large luxury apartments. However, Cooke Town still manages to retain some of its colonial charm and has been called the nicest place by Bangalore historian Peter Colaco.
It is now a posh neighbourhood with plenty of greenery, parks, educational institutions, hospitals and is at close proximity to Bangalore East Railway Station and the Bangalore CBD. Cooke Town has a lot of landmarks which include Bangalore Pork Shop which is one of the Bangalore Cantonment’s oldest establishments, Milton Street Park, Ascension Church, and Masjid-e-Munwara among others.
