One of the oldest suburbs of Mumbai, Bhandup is famous for the Shivaji Lake, which is named after
Chhatrapati Shivaji, the great Maratha ruler. Thousands of Ganapati devotees come here to
immerse idols of Lord Ganesha during August to September. Bhandup is also the name of a railway
station on the Mumbai suburban railway on its Central Railway line. Do you know that the word
Bhandup comes from ‘Bhandupeshwar’? This is one of the names of the Indian deity, Lord Shiva.
Bhandup West still has an old Lord Shiva temple called the Bhandupeshwar Mahadev Mandir.
Most of this area has original inhabitants of Mumbai. They include Agri and Koli and are usually
the Zamindars of Bombay state. About 40 years ago, this area was a dense forest which was
gradually developed due to the growth of industries. Today, Bhandup is becoming a very prime
location for real estate investors and various companies and that is why the locality has more
growth opportunities in future too. Bhandup also has one of Asia's biggest water filtration
plants.

started in this area? Crompton Greaves was established here in 1937. Most industries are
situated in Bhandup West. Some of them are CEAT Tyres, BASF, Asian Paints Ltd, Refining Company
Limited, The Indian Smelting, etc. There are also several small-scale manufacturing units spread
all over Bhandup West. There are also other companies like SunTim Software Pvt. Ltd, Vizista
Technologies, Viraj Engineering Co. etc.
Shopping and Entertainment
Bhandup boass many malls thanks to the affluent areas of Powai and Mulund being in the vicinity.
Dreams the Mall is being developed and will become one of the biggest in the area. Then there is
Neptune Magnet mall, which has big retail outlets and high-end stores and multiplexes. Others
include Leo Mall and the under development HBS Centrix shopping centre. There are also many
famous shoe stores in Bhandup West.

West’s arterial road is the Agra Road and while Bhandup East has the Eastern Express

Four buses, namely Bus No.453, 509, 545 and 603 pass through Bhandup East.
BEST Ladies Special bus also plies in the morning and goes till Andheri(E). There is also a
special State Transport Bus service every morning that goes to CWC (Navi Mumbai).
Bhandup has its own railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai
Suburban Railway network.
