Kashmiri Gate OVERVIEW
Kashmiri Gate or Kashmere Gate is one of the many gates built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan,
to reinforce the security of his empire's capital Shahjahanabad. As is the history behind the
naming of every gate this one derives its name since the road led to Kashmir. Located close to
river Yamuna the area around it became a site of recreational gardens and country houses built
by the members of the emperor's court and royal family. Later this area became an important
location for some of the most prominent residential area for the British.
Post-independence, the area around Kashmere Gate was developed into a major transport hub with
the construction of the Inter State Bus Terminal. Apart from being a monument with historical
significance, the Kashmiri Gate is still deemed an important location, because it serves as the
headquarters of Delhi metro.
Today, Kashmere Gate area is a prime commercial and residential centre in North Delhi and one of
the most important junction since the ISBT, Delhi Junction Railway Station and the Red Fort is
located in this area.
