All of us have that one shirt we are sure we will fit in to after losing some weight or that basketball that lies untouched in a corner of the house. Get rid of the anchor that is clutter, before you set sail to your new home and make your house-shifting a smooth process.


Begin with the little things

Instead of launching in to a major de-clutter operation, go through one drawer at a time. Take a look at your kitchen cabinet. Are there ingredients you never use? Get rid of them. Throw away old cosmetics. Remember that the clutter didn’t land up all at once and it’s not going to go away overnight.This step by step de-cluttering operation will make the shifting, a cake walk on the d-day.


Do you honestly need 30 teaspoons? What about take away containers? Charities can benefit from old clothes, sheets, toys etc. So give away the things you don’t use anymore. Bin the things you absolutely don’t need before you. Hold a yard sale for the things you don’t use but others may find some use for.

Misplaced belongings

When you’re sorting through your stuff before shifting your house, it is likely that you will find things that belong to your friends or family. A barbeque set that your brother left behind or some books that you borrowed from your best friend. Return these and save yourself the trouble of packing them.

Your new crib

Keep imagining how your new place is going to look like. You want it to look clean and spacious. Then you really don’t need to carry over too much from your current home. Be ruthless. Make a list of the essentials you will need in your new home. This will help you to dispose better. Take pictures when you can’t afford to take items of sentimental value with you to your new home.

Moving day

It’s possible that when you start packing for your new house you realise that there are things you can do without. When moving day arrives and your friends come over to help you, give these away to them. These practices may also enable you to hire a truck or book packers and movers in a smaller budget.
